The quintessential original Christmas tree, the Norway Spruce has been grown on UK shores since Victorian times and is the variety people mostly associate with christmas.
It's classic shape, look and fresh scent all contribute to that traditional and nostalgic christmas feeling.
Sporting dark green foliage all year round and featuring a good symmetrical conical shape, with thin prickly needles that sit sharply rigid, perfect for hanging up those decorations.
Needle retention on this particular variety can be poor if it is not properly looked after, but given plenty of water and care then needle loss should be minimal.
Here are some care tips to help keep your Norway Spruce Christmas tree fresh and beautiful throughout the Christmas season:Choose a Fresh Tree: When selecting your Norway Spruce, look for vibrant, dark green needles that are firmly attached and not easily shed. The tree should have a pleasant, fresh pine scent.
Keep the Tree Hydrated: Place the tree in a sturdy stand with plenty of water capacity and fill it with water immediately after setting it up. Norway Spruce trees can drink a lot of water, especially in the first few days, so check the water level daily and refill as needed to keep the tree hydrated. Never let the water level fall below the base of the trunk.
Position Away from Heat Sources: To prevent your Norway Spruce from drying out too quickly, place it away from direct sunlight, radiators, fireplaces, and heating vents. Cooler temperatures will help the tree retain moisture and last longer.
Avoid Additives in Water: Use plain water for your tree stand. Additives such as sugar, aspirin, or commercial tree preservatives are not necessary and may sometimes reduce the tree's lifespan.
Minimize Needle Loss: The Norway Spruce tends to shed needles more readily than other varieties, so handle it gently when decorating or adjusting lights. Regularly vacuum around the tree to pick up any fallen needles.
Remove the Tree After Christmas: Once the Christmas season is over, promptly remove your Norway Spruce from your home to prevent it from becoming a fire hazard as it dries out.
By following these care tips, your Norway Spruce will stay lush and fragrant, adding to the festive spirit of your Christmas celebrations.

Christmas tree care
Remember to ask your supplier where the trees come from, and to choose a locally sourced and grown tree, or one that has at least been grown in the UK rather than abroad.
When displaying trees indoors, avoid placing them too close to a fire or radiator, as this will cause excessive moisture loss and needle drop.
Cut trees
- When you get the tree home, saw 2.5cm (1in) off the bottom with a pruning saw - We have already done this for you.
- Place in a stand with a well of water in the base
- Check daily and top up the water when the level drops
- With care, cut trees should last about four weeks
Trees in pots
- To reduce stress and damage to living trees, display them in a cool room
- Bring trees indoors as late as possible – the weekend before Christmas is ideal
- Do not keep living trees in the house any longer than 12 days, but be guided by the tree. If it looks unhappy, put it back outside
Either plant the tree out in the garden after Christmas, or (if you want to bring it indoors again next year) grow it on in a container, moving it into a bigger pot annually until you reach the maximum size that can be moved comfortably (about 45cm (18in) diameter and depth). Soil-based John Innes No 2 potting media is ideal.
