Description

The Olive tree features a graceful and gnarled trunk with silvery-gray bark that becomes more textured and intriguing with age. Its narrow, elongated leaves are leathery, lance-shaped, and a lustrous shade of green on the upper side, while the underside is covered with a soft gray fuzz.

Aside from its fruit production, the Olive tree is appreciated for its ornamental value. Its attractive foliage and sculptural form make it an excellent choice for both formal and informal garden designs. It can be used as a specimen tree, as part of a Mediterranean or drought-tolerant garden, or even as a container plant on patios or balconies.

Caring for an Olive tree requires some attention to ensure its well-being:

Sunlight: Provide your Olive tree with full sun exposure for at least six to eight hours a day. This will promote optimal growth and fruit production.

Soil: Plant your Olive tree in well-draining soil with a pH range of 6 to 8. If the soil is heavy or clay-like, amend it with organic matter, such as compost or well-rotted manure, to improve drainage.

Watering: Olive trees are drought-tolerant once established but require regular watering during their first few years. Water deeply and allow the soil to dry out slightly between waterings. Be cautious not to overwater, as this can lead to root rot.

Pruning: Prune your Olive tree during late winter or early spring to shape it, remove dead or diseased branches, and improve air circulation. Pruning can also help maintain a manageable size for harvesting olives.

Fertilization: Olive trees generally have low nutrient requirements. Apply a balanced fertilizer specifically formulated for fruit trees in early spring. Follow the package instructions for dosage and application.

Harvesting Olives: Depending on the variety, olives are typically ready for harvest in the late summer to early winter. Harvesting time may vary, so it's best to observe the color change and taste-test a few olives to determine their ripeness.
